Your Mardi Himal adventure begins with a pickup from your hotel in Pokhara, followed by a short drive to Dhampus Village, where our trekking journey commences. The first part of the trek leads to Pittam Deurali, a picturesque village offering potential views of the Annapurna range if the weather permits. Here, we'll stop for lunch and enjoy the scenic backdrop. The trek continues through dense forests, home to oak, maple, rhododendron, and hemlock trees. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, such as deer and monkeys, as we make our way to Forest Camp. This day’s trek is both invigorating and a great introduction to the natural beauty of the region.

On the second day, the trail ascends from Forest Camp to High Camp, beginning with an easy hike to Rest Camp, which takes about one hour. From there, a further one and a half hours of trekking brings us to Low Camp, where stunning views of Mount Fishtail await. This spot, at the junction of two trails, offers a route for those opting for a shorter 4-day trek via Siding to Low Camp.

Depending on your preference, lunch can be enjoyed at Low Camp or Badal Danda. Beyond Low Camp, a one-and-a-half-hour walk leads us to Badal Danda, where you are greeted with magical 360-degree mountain views. As we continue, the environment changes as we move above the treeline into high-altitude grasslands dotted with rhododendron bushes. Keep an eye out for the colorful Danphe pheasant in this area.

The final stretch to High Camp takes another 2-3 hours, culminating in expansive views of Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), and Mardi Himal. High Camp, our stop for the night, is the last camp before reaching the base of Mardi Himal, offering a perfect spot to rest and prepare for the trek ahead.

On the third day, our trek reaches its most thrilling and challenging point as we aim for the Mardi Himal Base Camp or the lower Viewpoint, depending on your preference. We begin our ascent early at 4 AM to capture the breathtaking sunrise from the viewpoint. Carrying only a daypack, we leave our luggage at High Camp and proceed on the trail. The early start helps us avoid the late morning clouds and fog that often obscure the stunning views of the surrounding peaks.

The first leg of the hike takes about two hours from High Camp to reach the viewpoint, where you can enjoy a warm tea or coffee against the backdrop of majestic mountains. Breakfast will be packed since the kitchen will not be operational before our departure.

The trail narrows as we advance from the lower to the upper viewpoint, leading us to an unrivaled view of the sacred and unclimbed Machhapuchhre, among other Himalayan giants such as Annapurna South and Hiunchuli. After soaking in the views and reaching the Base Camp, we retrace our steps back to High Camp for lunch, followed by a descent to Badal Danda for an overnight stay.

The fourth day involves a descent from Badal Danda to Landruk, retracing our steps down to Forest Camp before taking a different route to Landruk. This part of the trek offers a change in scenery as we make our way down through the lush forests. Lunch will be served either at Rest Camp or Forest Camp. The journey is moderately paced, providing plenty of time to enjoy the natural beauty as we approach Landruk, where we will spend the night.

On the final day of our trek, we make a short and easy walk from Landruk to Siwai, which takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. This marks the conclusion of our trekking adventure. Once we arrive in Siwai, a private taxi or jeep will transport us back to Pokhara. The drive offers a chance to relax and reflect on the memorable experiences of the past few days. Upon arrival in Pokhara, you'll be dropped off at your hotel, marking the end of the Mardi Himal Trek.

            Useful Information

Best Season for Trekking: The optimal times for trekking Mardi Himal are during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) seasons. During these months, the weather is generally clear, offering unobstructed views of the Himalayan peaks and pleasant temperatures. The spring season also brings the added beauty of blooming rhododendrons along the trails, enhancing the scenic hiking experience.

Trekking Route Details: The Mardi Himal Trek is a less trodden path in the Annapurna region, ideal for those seeking a quieter alternative to the more crowded trails. The trek typically starts in Dhampus and passes through Forest Camp, Low Camp, and High Camp before reaching the Mardi Himal Base Camp. This route offers a unique perspective of Machhapuchhre, Annapurna South, and Mardi Himal, with varied landscapes ranging from lush forests to rocky mountain terrain.

Accommodation Options: Throughout the Mardi Himal trek, accommodations are primarily in teahouses and guesthouses. These facilities provide basic but comfortable lodging, often with twin-sharing rooms and communal bathrooms. Teahouses offer a cozy, communal atmosphere, which is a great way to interact with other trekkers and learn about local life from the guesthouse owners.

Recommended Trekking Gear and Clothing: For a successful trek, proper gear is essential. Key items include a sturdy pair of hiking boots, a durable backpack, thermal clothing for the chilly mornings and evenings, breathable fabrics for daytime hiking, a waterproof jacket, and a sleeping bag suitable for low temperatures. Don’t forget essentials like a hat, gloves, and a good supply of sunscreen to protect against the strong sun at higher altitudes.

Additional Tips and Considerations: It's important to prepare for the physical demands of the trek with some pre-trek fitness training. Hydration is key, so always carry plenty of water along with water purification tablets or a filter. Hiring a local guide not only enhances the trekking experience with insights into the local culture and environment but also supports the local economy. Always have some local currency for purchases where electronic payments aren't accepted, and respect local customs and traditions as you trek through diverse ethnic communities.
