The Manaslu Circuit Trek, nestled in Nepal, stands out as a scenic and truly remote journey. This trekking path is likely the most overlooked yet ranks among Nepal's top restricted treks in the Manaslu Region. The 14 Days Manaslu Trek captivates as a prime destination following Everest, Annapurna, and Langtang. Notably, it's one of the rare trekking areas where solo travelers are permitted, provided there's a duo in the group. The trek requires the guidance of a Nepal Government Licensed Trekking Guide and both a special permit and an ACAP permit. Mount Manaslu, soaring at 8163 meters, is the world’s eighth highest peak and a significant allure of the Manaslu area.

Off-Beaten Restricted Trekking Trail in Nepal

The Manaslu Trekking Region unveils as an exquisitely beautiful restricted trekking trail in Nepal. It encompasses the captivating Tsum Valley and the breathtaking Larkya La Pass at 5106m, alongside the indigenous mountain cultures. Here, you can discover the hidden cultures and beauty of the Manaslu region. Being a restricted zone, acquiring the following permits is essential:

Manaslu Restricted Area Permit(MCAP): Issued by the Government of Nepal, this permit is essential for accessing the Manaslu Conservation Area.
Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP): Necessary for the Manaslu Circuit Trek's conclusion in the Annapurna region, this can be obtained in Kathmandu or Pokhara.
MCAP refers to the Manaslu Area Project, and ACAP is the Annapurna Area Conservation Project. The region is rich with villages, forests, lakes, landscapes, and side trails. Hence, a guide with profound experience and sharp navigation skills is paramount. Additionally, the trail is susceptible to landslides, demanding thorough planning and trip organization.

The route takes you to warmer regions, traversing numerous farm villages and towns along the Trisuli River and Budi Gandaki River. Your day ends with a stay at a local guesthouse, set against the backdrop of a stunning valley.

After spending the night in Machha Khola, your morning trek follows the Buri Gandaki River upstream to Khorla Beshi, a quaint farm village. The trail winds pleasantly towards Tatopani, known for its "Hot Spring." Here, you have the opportunity for a rejuvenating hot bath, time permitting. After a restful break, the journey continues to Yaruphant and follows the river to Jagat village. A brief crossing over a suspension bridge leads you to this moderately sized farm village, equipped with shops and stores.

From Jagat, your trek progresses higher, encountering numerous small farm villages. The journey includes a visit to Sidibas Bazaar, a charming village. After a brief rest, a short climb and descent lead you across a suspension bridge to Nagjet, followed by a climb to Philim, a large village known for its scattered farmhouses. The path continues through farm terraces of golden wheat and barley fields, then ascends a rocky ridge into a bamboo forest, culminating in an overnight stay at Dyang village.

Leaving Dyang, the trail passes through a stunning forest adorned with numerous Tibetan mani walls, featuring intricately hand-carved stones with Buddhist scriptures. The route weaves in and out of canyons, with a mostly gradual ascent into an open valley. You'll enter a vibrant forest of firs, oaks, and rhododendrons before arriving at Namrung for your overnight stay, covering a distance of 19.5 km.

As you depart from Lo Goan, you'll notice the altitude gain with significantly cooler temperatures. The landscape changes as tree lines give way to sparse juniper bushes and willow trees. The trail offers a gentle walk with panoramic views of snow-capped peaks. Your destination, Samagaon, is a large mountain village strategically positioned on the route to Manaslu Base Camp and Larkya-La Pass, as well as the pathway to the Tibet border.

This day is crucial for acclimatization before venturing into the higher elevations and tackling the Larkya-La Pass. Take this opportunity to explore the village and its surroundings with short hikes. You have the choice to trek to Birendra Lake or towards the Tibet border, immersing yourself in the serene and hidden natural beauty of the Manaslu region.

Today's journey, spanning approximately 4 to 5 hours, leads you to Samdo, the last village before the Larkya La Pass and close to the Tibet border. Samdo is not only the highest but also one of the most beautiful villages before the pass. Here, you can delve into local culture, traditions, and customs, visit the monastery, and enjoy mesmerizing views of the Manaslu Himalayas. This village, near the Tibet border, is known for its assortment of Chinese goods.

A shorter trekking day brings you to Larkya Phedi or Dharmasala after leaving Samdo village. The route involves crossing an icy stream and venturing into a drier, barren area. The trek is relatively easy but includes rapid altitude gain with a few short ascents and descents. You'll complete your morning walk at Larkya Phedi, the base of the hill or pass, leaving the afternoon free for leisure activities or a short exploratory hike.

An early start is essential to reach the summit of Larkya-La Pass at 5135m. This strenuous and lengthy climb offers breathtaking views of the surrounding hills, valleys, and peaks, including Mt. Manaslu, Larkya Peak, Bouddha Himal, Himalchuli, and Peak 29. After a steep ascent, you'll reach the top adorned with Buddhist prayer flags, offering stunning vistas. Following a period of rest and scenery enjoyment, the trail descends through forested areas, culminating in an overnight stay in Bimthang after a challenging day of trekking.

After the challenging trek across the Larkya-La Pass, today's journey offers a more relaxed pace with a gradual downhill walk to Gho. This tranquil location is nestled within a forested area. From Bimthang, your path weaves through pristine woodlands rich with rhododendron, pines, and oak trees, passing several farm shelters before arriving at Gho for your overnight stay.

The trek from Gho to Dharapani is relatively easy, predominantly downhill through the picturesque Manang area to Telje village, situated by the Marysangdi River. Dharapani is a significant village on the Annapurna Circuit trekking route, featuring many fine lodges. Here, the Manaslu Circuit trek merges with the globally renowned Annapurna Circuit trail. If time permits, you can extend your adventure towards the Annapurna Circuit after completing the Larkya La Pass. Following breakfast, the journey to Besisahar begins, taking approximately 2-3 hours by local sharing jeep. From Besisahar, the drive back to Kathmandu spans around 6-7 hours. For a more comfortable experience, opting for a private vehicle from Besisahar to Kathmandu is highly recommended.
